This is a G-pipe (kena) from Kena Kobo Pino in Sayama City, Saitama Prefecture. The material is Peruvian bamboo, with the outer skin removed. This bamboo has a lot of fibers, resulting in a soft sound without harsh high notes. The maker has 30 years of experience and recently has been commissioned by professional kena players such as Irichimontecinos and Daisuke Watanabe of MAYA. A feature of Pino's kena is a process of burning the inside of the bamboo, which no other Japanese kena maker has mastered, to prevent insect damage and pitch changes over time. This process was learned at a kena workshop in Peru.
