"Menpeki Kunen" refers to the story of Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, who meditated facing a wall for nine years. During those nine years, Bodhidharma lost the use of his limbs. This story was brought to Japan, and the "daruma" doll was created. The ink stick features a picture of a "daruma" on the back. The meaning of the story is to do one thing (practice) with a single-minded focus.
