Synopsis France during the Algerian War. Geneviève, the daughter of an umbrella shop owner in the port town of Cherbourg, is in love with Guy, an auto mechanic, and they are engaged. However, Guy receives his draft notice, and the two spend their first night together before he is deployed. Geneviève, pregnant with Guy's child, waits for his return, but grows anxious as she receives few letters from him. In the meantime, she is proposed to by a wealthy jeweler, Roland Cassard, and gradually begins to open her heart to him...
