It is a prefecturally designated traditional craft that harmonizes the refreshingness and familiarity of bamboo crafts with the tasteful luster and high-class feel of lacquerware. It is said to have originated in the late Edo period when a Kyoto lacquer craftsman invited to the Kurume domain devised the original "Kurume domain lacquerware."
