This is a grass-dyed raw silk kimono from the workshop of Sohei Hayashi, a regular member of the Japan Kogei Association. Mr. Sohei Hayashi has been producing high-quality grass-dyed tsumugi and Echigo Jofu, an Important Intangible Cultural Property, in Echigo for many years. Echigo Ancient Tsumugi, carefully hand-woven with hand-spun cotton yarn dyed with plant dyes for both warp and weft, is a representative tsumugi known as a weaver of Echigo Jofu. The Sohei Hayashi workshop in Muika-machi, Uonuma-gun, Niigata Prefecture, which is also a production area for Shiozawa, continues to weave Echigo Jofu, Shiozawa Tsumugi, and Hon-Shiozawa for three generations. This work features a pale, elegant color and a textured tsumugi fabric with a striped pattern across the entire surface.
