Although there is no certification paper, this is genuine Yuki-Tsumugi. It is 100-monme kikko (tortoise shell pattern). "100-monme" refers to the fact that 100 tortoise shell patterns are woven within the width of the fabric (approximately one shaku). Since one shaku equals 10 sun, if there are 10 tortoise shell patterns per sun, it is 100-monme kikko. When measured, there may be 10 or 11 per sun. This is because it is hand-woven, non-twisted silk tsumugi, so the thickness of the threads is not uniform. It will shrink during the finishing process, but the width is made uniform. This is 100-monme kikko. The texture is light and different from the typical glossy silk. Because the threads are untwisted, it is delicate and resilient, yet supple and soft to the touch. Slight fuzziness and unevenness in the weave are also characteristic of hand-woven Yuki. As it is raw silk, there may be some dust attached. Because hand-drawn raw silk is also used for the warp threads, the weave feels warm and gentle. A garden pattern is expressed in kasuri (ikat) on the water flow. The ground color is a hue between indigo and dark navy. This tsumugi is truly warm in winter. In recent years, only about 500 bolts of Yuki-Tsumugi are woven annually. 300 of those are striped.
