Since it is unrefined, it contains honey and impurities. Placing it at the entrance of the beehive is effective in attracting honeybees. Although it looks bad because of the impurities and black color, it seems to be more effective that way, so I use it on purpose. (It's darker than in the photos) In my case, when I used to place Kinryohen, about 30% of the bees would enter, but when I use beeswax balls, last year about 80% entered, and in some years, all 9 of my beehives, meaning 100%, were occupied.
