Although many photos are included, the majority are exquisite handwritten illustrations. I purchased this used so that my child could use it as a reference for drawing and sketching. I believe that children can learn a lot by looking at carefully drawn pictures. They can also learn about pictorial elements such as color usage and line density. Current encyclopedias often feature photos, CG, or simple cute illustrations, making this book, with its detailed and accurate handwritten depictions of individual animal hairs and the stamens and pistils of plants, extremely valuable. It also contains details that are not taught in such detail nowadays. I believe it can be used by a wide range of ages, from preschoolers to elementary school students. The "Insects" volume shows the most signs of use, but there are no writings, tears, or noticeable stains, and I believe it can still be used comfortably.
