Henk Visch "If I must die, you must live" Booklet, difficult to obtain outside of the local area Wako Works of Art (Roppongi) is pleased to announce the exhibition "If I must die, you must live," curated by Dutch artist Henk Visch, which will focus on the works of Palestinian poets and painters, from Friday, May 17, 2024, to Saturday, June 29, 2024. The title of this exhibition is taken from the opening lines of a poem that Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer (born 1979) posted on social media before his death. The month after posting this poem, Alareer was killed in an Israeli airstrike. This poem, Alareer's last, serves as the overarching message of this exhibition. The exhibition will feature Visch's new sculptures and drawings, poems by Musab Abu Toha (born 1992), prints by painter Suleiman Mansour (born 1947), and posters created by artists for Gaza (Posters for Gaza). In addition, Yoshitomo Nara (born 1959), who has been a close friend of Visch for many years and supports the intention of this project, will also be exhibiting new works. Henk Visch, born in the Netherlands in 1950, gained recognition from the 1980s onwards for his anthropomorphic sculptures born from poetic and philosophical contemplation, and his highly abstract sculptural works that strongly remain in the viewer's memory. He has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale (1988) and Documenta 9 (1992), and since the 2000s, he has expanded his activities to Asia, including Japan, Singapore, and China. In 2023, he received the Wilhelminaring Award, established to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Queen Wilhelmina's accession to the throne in the Netherlands, and the award exhibition "Dance in the Court of Justice" is currently being held at the CODA Museum (Netherlands) (until June 23).
