It also covers the back of your neck, which is prone to sunburn. The material is linen, so it's smooth and doesn't stick to your skin, making it comfortable even in the hot summer. It also covers your shoulders, so it's useful for protection against air conditioning. It can be worn either way up, with the front of the bolero in the first photo having a gentle curve, and the front of the bolero in the second photo having a more angular shape.
