(＠＾＾＠) This literary melodrama is based on Yukio Mishima's novel of the same name, adapted by Shigeo Fujita and Koreyoshi Kurahara, starring Ruriko Asaka and directed by Koreyoshi Kurahara. The film boldly visualizes the original story, which depicts the "thirst for love" of Etsuko, a wealthy widow who is the lover of her late husband's father. Ruriko Asaka's performance, which directly confronts the sensual descriptions of Mishima's literature, exudes an irresistibly alluring feminine charm from the entire screen. The suffocating atmosphere is depicted with a daring camera work that is both thrilling and revealing, making it Asaka's shocking representative work. The monochrome screen suddenly turns bright red, and the shot of Ruriko Asaka walking towards the front with the crimson sky in the background, the sensual descriptions, and the bloody murder scenes are full of highlights. The innovative lighting, camera work, subtitle processing, and still effects, etc., the bold and original screen composition by director Kurahara and the staff became a hot topic, almost like a visual art. It was ranked 7th in the Kinema Junpo Best Ten of 1967.
