Kagura originally began when ancient people danced to pray for good health and rejuvenation of the soul. This ritual of soul-soothing and purification is said to be the origin of various Shinto performing arts. A mold is made from clay, Japanese paper is carefully layered, and a solution of gofun (powdered oyster shell) is applied, followed by coloring.
