This item has been in long-term storage. It is a cylindrical, four-legged, lidded lacquerware *hokai* (also known as *hokoi* or *gekyo*). The exterior is black lacquer, and the interior is red lacquer. The lid and body have brass fittings with an arc-shaped geometric pattern and chrysanthemum design. One of the brass fittings on the lid is missing. This is an antique item, used for the *mochimaki* (rice cake scattering) ceremony at the topping-out ceremony until the Showa 50s (1975-1984).
