Kagura originally began when ancient people danced to pray for good health and rejuvenation of the soul. This ritual of soul-soothing and purification is said to be the origin of various Shinto performing arts. It was made by creating a mold with clay, carefully layering Japanese paper, applying a coating of gofun (powdered oyster shell), and then coloring it. It has a unique smell when held in the mouth.
