This is a collection of dance fans (mai-sensu) once owned by a maiko who was said to be legendary in Kyoto. It is unknown whether these were used in the teahouse, but she loved Japanese accessories and collected many of them since her time as a trainee maiko. This dance fan is said to bring good fortune, such as attracting good patrons and unexpected income, when displayed with the front side facing out. When displayed with the back side facing out, it is said to purify the room. This is an item that was actually displayed in her own room, making it a very auspicious fan. During her time as a maiko and geiko, she was said to be one of the most popular in Kyoto, and it was passed down in the geisha district like a talisman, with the belief that it would "increase popularity, success in all arts, and the chance of a good marriage." We were fortunate enough to receive this item. This is a very rare item that is not usually available, so if you are interested, please consider it.
