Hakata Scissors, a special local craft designated by the Fukuoka Prefectural Governor, boasting a history of approximately 700 years. This is a work by the late Seiichi Takayanagi, the fourth-generation owner of Takayanagi Shoten, who was the last person to preserve this craft. This piece was purchased about 20 years ago and has been stored unused. Mr. Seiichi Takayanagi had many orders from all over the country, and at the time of purchase, there was a two-year waiting list. He mentioned that due to the meticulousness of his work, he could only make three scissors a day. He also said that the base metal needed to be from old iron, so he would search for iron from old iron bridges and forge it. During his lifetime, I visited his workshop to receive a 6-sun (approximately 18 cm) pair, and he said that he had some special, slightly larger ones made for a TV shoot. He then brought out a 7-sun (approximately 21 cm) pair, which is this piece. (The standard lineup consists of 4-sun, 5-sun, and 6-sun sizes.) He said that he sold mostly 6-sun scissors, but this 7-sun pair was made for a TV shoot and didn't have a buyer yet, so I asked to purchase it.
