This is a large Imari-ware bowl with a sometsuke (blue and white) landscape design. Based on the style, the color of the cobalt blue, and the brushwork, it is presumed to be from the late Edo period. The landscape design, which spreads across the entire inside of the bowl, features a bold arrangement of pine trees, rocks, and water, while also utilizing negative space. This composition gives a sense of the expansiveness unique to Imari sometsuke. The painting is not overly detailed, but rather uses the energy and blurring of the brushstrokes to create an expressive effect, setting it apart from mass-produced pieces.
