Sorting through my collection. Early 1800s antique. I previously purchased this for around 20,000 yen here. It has been kept in a dark place without ever being displayed. This is an antique grisaille (riddle) plate from the Creil et Montereau kiln in France. It was manufactured in the 19th century, and some plates have the answer written on the back, but this plate does not appear to. It features a design like a "hanjiei" (riddle picture) that combines text and illustrations to create wordplay. It has a plant-patterned border and illustrations of angels, animals, and tools.
