The process of applying several coats of roiro-urushi (a type of black lacquer) with a special spatula, drying, and sanding to remove unevenness is repeated. After that, random patterns of green, red, black, and gold lacquer are applied, dried, and then the entire surface is polished to reveal the Karato pattern. Finally, a transparent lacquer is applied, dried, and the surface is finished, resulting in a very labor-intensive and the most durable chopsticks in Japan.
