This is a three-tiered jubako called **Yusan-bako** (picnic box), a traditional craft of Tokushima Prefecture, made using Kamakura-bori (carving). It has been made since the Edo period, and especially from the Taisho era to the pre-war Showa era, children loved to use it as a lunch box for picnics in the mountains and fields, and for the Doll Festival. In the image, the outer box is black lacquered with a tortoise shell-like pattern carved on it, and the three-tiered containers inside are decorated with rabbits leaping through the waves and cherry blossom petals. Kamakura-bori is characterized by delicate and powerful carvings and the deep color tones of lacquer.
