This is a lacquerware "E-awase" sake cup from Yamada Heiando, purveyor to the Imperial Household Agency. "Miawase" was a game played in the Heian period. Players would arrange dozens of paired seashells and try to find the matching pairs. This "E-awase" cup is inspired by that game. The cup features dice pips and matching illustrations. The size of the cup you drink from depends on the roll of the dice. We hope this cup will make drinking sake itself a fun game.
