"Ghost in the Shell," a science fiction manga series by Masamune Shirow, began serialization in "Young Magazine Pirate Edition" in 1989. Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body prosthetic (cyborg) with excellent abilities in cyber warfare and combat. The story depicts the "Ghost in the Shell" unit, led by her, a "Major," confronting increasingly complex and vicious crimes. Shirow Masamune's depiction of a highly advanced and information-based near-future world is a unique worldview that weaves together technology and philosophical inquiry, continuing to influence many creators.
