Ashiya Chigusa Ningyo (Chigusa Dolls) "Playing with Beanbags" These are handmade dolls by the artist. I purchased them at an exhibition in a department store in Tokyo. These beautiful, handmade creative dolls, made from old cloth, depict a mother and daughter playing. The mother and daughter's kimonos and obi are also selected one by one from old kimonos, and the dolls are so beautiful that they take your breath away. Even small accessories such as kanzashi (hair ornaments) and hair decorations are handmade. I was so captivated by the beauty of the work that I visited the exhibition many times and was fortunate enough to speak with the artist, Ms. Sachiko Tamai. I heard that Ms. Tamai herself was very fond of the fabric used for the mother's kimono in this work, and that she considered it a masterpiece. Each doll is small, about 6-8cm tall, but the gentle atmosphere of the mother and daughter enjoying traditional Japanese play is very lovely. I display them occasionally during the Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival) season, and otherwise they have been stored at home for a long time. For those who appreciate old items. Base size: 11cm x 15cm Chigusa Ningyo originated when a housewife who had evacuated to Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, brought back Kogushi dolls to Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, shortly after the war. In 1951, training began at the Hyogo Prefectural Federation of Women's Associations, and Ryo Araki (1900-2001) made improvements. In contrast to the Kogushi dolls, which were themed on the folk customs of Hagi, the Chigusa dolls were adapted to the atmosphere of Ashiya, pursuing elegance and completing them as glamorous, four-sided dolls. They were named "Chigusa Ningyo" by Katsuyo Hirose, the chairman of the Hyogo Prefectural Federation of Women's Associations at the time.
