This album features the reunion of most of the surviving members from the band's early 1970s lineup (including Carlos Santana, Gregg Rolie, Neal Schon, Michael Carabello, and Michael Shrieve). It was the first time the five-piece lineup had recorded together since *Santana III* in 1971. Percussionist Jose Elias declined to participate. In addition to these "core" members, Karl Perazzo (percussion) and Benny Rietveld (bass), who would later become Santana members, joined, and vocalist Ronald Isley made a guest appearance on two tracks. *Santana IV* features 16 new songs written, composed, and produced by the band. The reunion began several years prior when Schon suggested collaborating with Carlos Santana. Santana liked the idea and further proposed enlisting Rolie, Shrieve, and Carabello to create an album that would become known as *Santana IV* (a successor to *Santana III*). After initial songwriting sessions and rehearsals in 2013, the group recorded from 2014 to 2015, producing 16 new songs that combined their signature elements of Afro-Latin rhythms, vocals, blues-psychedelic guitar solos, and percussion.
