When you think of Nikon AF macro lenses, you probably think of the 60mm and 105mm, but the 55mm was available in the very early days. Besides the Ai AF version, there's also the Ais 55mm, but the AF version offers 1x magnification, while the MF version offers 1/2x magnification. This was Nikon's first 1x macro lens. (The MF model could achieve 1x magnification with a special tube, but it was just a tube, so infinity focus was not possible.) Regarding the image quality, it's like the sensual MINOLTA, and the resolving power of Nikon. The focus plane resolves incredibly well from the wide-open aperture. The cat image is a perfect example; I focused on the eye at f/2.8, and the whiskers and fur are beautifully separated. The images presented here are degraded, but based on the data I have, the resolution is impeccable. This is also true for the cicada shell, which clearly depicts even the water droplets. For a lens from this era, the image quality is so good that you can enjoy it without spending a lot of money on an AF-S lens. Please consider it.
