There are slight scratches on the cover. We are launching a new art magazine, "Dream Island." The theme of the first issue is "The Earth = Basis." As you can see from the table of contents, artists, architects, manga artists, and others are engaging with this theme and expressing their thoughts through their practices, covering a wide range of subjects from architectural design to reclaimed land, aquariums, world expositions, virtual reality, animation, and monuments. Of course, it's a magazine, so you can read it from anywhere, but the content should resonate with each other throughout. The theme setting is in accordance with the editorial policy of this magazine. What gathers on Dream Island is not reading or searching, but texts based on production, design, encounters, research, conversations, and wanderings. As the planner, I call such texts "primary sources," and I repeatedly asked the contributors, "Is it a primary source?" during the editing process. I feel that the lament that there is "no discourse" and "no criticism" in the Japanese art scene coincided with the spread of the novel coronavirus. Since 2020, the opportunities to stare at smartphone and computer displays and communicate through earphones and microphones have increased. Even visits to hospitalized relatives are sometimes done via tablets, many meetings are considered sufficient with online meetings, and going to university or work has become synonymous with mastering chat tools and cloud services. As a result, countless words have flooded into digital devices and the internet. Numerous notifications simultaneously flow into pockets, wrists, ears, and desks, and responding to them has become working, studying, and engaging in artistic activities. Of course, the cause is not only the avoidance of infection risk, but also the diversification of online tools and applications due to the spread of technologies such as AWS (Amazon Web Service)... I am overlapping these social changes of the past few years with the absence of discourse and criticism.
