I received this from an acquaintance, an archaeologist who traveled in China about 30 years ago. This instrument, similar to the shō, a mouth-blown free-reed instrument used in Japanese gagaku (court music), is a bamboo wind instrument (a reed-based aerophone) called a lusheng (lúshēng, ルーシェン, ルーション in Pinyin) that is passed down among ethnic minorities (such as the Miao, Dong, and Yao) in the mountainous regions of southwestern China (Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, etc.). It has a structure in which multiple bamboo pipes of different lengths are inserted into a long wooden (or gourd) resonator (páo). Each bamboo pipe has a reed (sound-producing element), and sound is produced when the reed vibrates by blowing or sucking air from the mouthpiece. It has a sound similar to bagpipes and is played on occasions such as the New Year and festivals, especially the "Lusheng Festival," where villagers play the lusheng and dance, playing an important role in ethnic culture. Among the Miao people, it is also considered an important "medium" in their love lives. It is said to be the root of the shō used in Japanese gagaku and is said to have a history of about 3,000 years. In addition, the manufacturing techniques of the lusheng were registered on China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2006.
