Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (June 21, 1839 - September 29, 1908) A Brazilian novelist, poet, and short story writer. A representative writer of Brazil. He grew up in a poor family in Rio de Janeiro during the Second Empire, when slavery was in place. His paternal grandparents were freed slaves, and his mother was a Portuguese immigrant. He was self-taught, and debuted in the literary world as a poet while working at a bookstore and printing press. He worked in a wide range of genres, including newspaper reviews, poetry, plays, short and long novels, and translations. He served as the first president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. In general, the novels "The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas," "Dom Casmurro," and "Quincas Borba" are considered his three major masterpieces, and his short stories, including "The Psychiatrist," are also highly regarded.
