This is a masterpiece album and the Blue Note debut of tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, who is highly popular for his bold and powerful blowing. Gordon, who had retired for a time in the 1950s, returned and recorded this in 1961. The participating members were the up-and-coming Freddie Hubbard (tp), and the rhythm section consisted of Horace Parlan (p), George Tucker (b), and Al Harewood (ds), which is the same lineup as Parlan's masterpiece, BLP 4037 "US Three"! They are in excellent form and provide outstanding support for Gordon. Gordon's magnificent blowing resonates throughout the album, but you'll be captivated by his lyrical performance on the standard ballad "You've Changed." US Blue Note BST84077 stereo liberty label RVG STEREO The original was released in 1961, but this is a reissue from 1972. The jacket has some wear and tear, including scuffs, yellowing, and stains due to aging. The labels are different, with Liberty on side A and UA on side B. The record surface has very little noise and is in very good condition, allowing you to enjoy the overwhelming power of the Van Gelder sound. It comes with the original company sleeve.
