This is a wooden netsuke. It is inscribed with the name "Shōshō," a contemporary artist said to have been a disciple of the third-generation "Shōjiki," a sculptor from Ise, Mie Prefecture. The material is likely Ashikuma boxwood. The carving is incredibly detailed, with a size that is surprisingly realistic, as shown in the image.
