Hojuin was founded in 1685 (the 2nd year of Joho) with the construction of the Bentendo of the Lotus Pond by Reigen Shonin, the 30th abbot of Zojoji Temple. The temple enshrines the Great Benzaiten of Career Advancement and Good Fortune, owned by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and a 2-meter-tall wooden statue of Enma Daio (a designated cultural property of Minato-ku). The Benten Pond next to Hojuin was once called "Lotus Pond" and "Yuriga-fuchi," and was loved by writers and painters, becoming the motif of many works.
