It is a reprint of the original, which was produced and published around 1937 during the war by the Tokyo Fish Market Co., Ltd., as part of a campaign to promote fish consumption. The reading cards include explanations of fish and fishing that are still relevant today, such as "Firefly squid lantern procession" and "Swordfish I want to give to the soldiers," as well as phrases that reflect the social conditions of the time, making it a cultural heritage unique to Tsukiji. Hideo Hasegawa, who was the head of the planning and advertising department of the company, devised the idea and created both the picture cards and the reading cards himself. The original was distributed to about 5,000 sets to production areas and wholesalers at the time, but it was scattered due to the war, and many enthusiasts called it the "phantom karuta."
