This is a Zeni-daiko (銭太鼓), a traditional Japanese percussion instrument and dance prop. About Zeni-daiko Structure It consists of a bamboo tube containing several "zeni" (coins), which make a pleasant rattling sound when shaken. Uses It is mainly used as accompaniment for the folk song "Yasugi-bushi" from Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, and as a dance prop for Dojyo-sukui (loach scooping dance) and Japanese traditional dance. Features It is generally used in pairs of two, one red and one purple (or blue), and the surface is decorated with gold and silver tape and tassels.
