The eldest son of Kichibei Saigo Takamori, a low-ranking feudal retainer of the Satsuma domain. His imina (personal name) was Takanaga at the time of genpuku (coming-of-age ceremony), later changed to Takeo and Takamori. His childhood name was Kokichi, and his common names were Kichinosuke, Zenbei, Kichibei, and Kichinosuke, which were changed in order. His gō (art name) was Nanshu. Takamori Saigo has the same name as his father, but this is because when he was awarded a rank in the Charter Oath of the Meiji Restoration, his close friend Tomomi Yoshii mistakenly submitted his father Kichibei's name, and he has used his father's name ever since.
