It blooms in early spring (March-April) with many yellow, string-like flowers. The cone-shaped fruits attached to the tips of the branches are harvested in the late autumn and used for dyeing. Due to its bactericidal properties, the decoction of the dried cones has been used to wash burns and frostbite, and as a medicine to suppress skin inflammation. It was also used for ohaguro (teeth blackening), which dyes the leaves black. In recent years, it has also been used for greening for erosion control, as it grows well even in poor soil, and for improving water quality in aquariums (making it acidic with the organic acid tannin).
