In the 1960s and 70s, the Chawai workshop made all guitars by hand, from material shaping and cutting to assembly, finishing, and painting, making them true handmade guitars. Around the 80s, demand increased, and the workshop shifted to mass production, with more apprentices and a division of labor in the production process. The guitar for sale was made in 1981, but its specifications, except for the label, are from the 70s, making it the last work of the peak period of the Chawai workshop. During this period, the guitars were characterized by a Santos Hernandez-style headstock and a unique rosette, offering a distinct flavor and tonal resonance not found in later mass-produced guitars. Furthermore, the 70s Chawai guitars are said to be particularly superior in craftsmanship and sound quality in the history of Chawai guitars. While there may be some exceptions, the Chawai guitars from the 80s onwards, which were mass-produced, are characterized by a Fleta-style headstock, allowing for the differentiation of production years by the headstock shape. The top is made of tightly grained German spruce solid wood, the sides and back are made of beautiful quarter-sawn solid Brazilian rosewood, the neck is sturdy mahogany, the fingerboard is jet-black ebony, and the bridge appears to be quarter-sawn Brazilian rosewood, joined in the Italian style. The acoustic effect of the German spruce and Brazilian rosewood produces the gorgeous, rich, and delicate sound of a Chawai handmade guitar. Although 44 years have passed since its production, it has few scratches or dents and is in good condition.
