Founder of the Shingon sect. One of the Three Brushes. Born in Sanuki (Kagawa Prefecture). In Enryaku 23 (804), he went to Tang (China) and received the secret teachings of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism from Huiguo of Qinglong Temple in Chang'an. After returning to Japan, he founded Kongobu-ji Temple on Mount Koya and Kyoogokokuji Temple (To-ji Temple) in Kyoto, and established Shugei Shuchi-in.
