This is a handmade live bait rig, specifically a "nomase" (live bait) fishing rig and an elevator rig. The characteristic feature is that the total length of the rig is set to be slightly longer, prioritizing bites and preventing the baitfish from weakening easily. We recommend trying this not only when fish are highly active but especially when they are finicky biters. The reason for adopting the "ear-attached" external knot for the main hook is that it provides reliable strength and the hook tends to face slightly inward, making it easier for the fish to swallow. Additionally, the distance between the main hook and the assist hook is set to approximately 15 cm, but please understand that there may be slight variations due to it being handmade. Commercial rigs have a narrower spacing. By widening the gap, it's possible to bait even larger fish, and if the spacing is too narrow, the assist hook can pierce vital areas of the fish, causing it to weaken, or if it's too short, the assist hook loses its purpose entirely. The main hook and assist hook are fixed, not movable, so they do not shift during the strike, reducing the chance of losing the fish. The photos show flatfish being fished with a bottom rig and yellowtail with a float rig. We use Yo-Zuri snap swivels (breaking strength: 12kg) and the Palomar knot for tying the line. The main hook is a Kawa-semi Chinu size 6, to which a soft luminous bead is attached to prevent small baitfish from biting through and to attract them. The assist hook is a black medium-shank treble hook #6, and the leader is approximately 1.1m of pink fluorocarbon line size 8, which is rumored to be invisible to fish (it's a supple fluorocarbon). When baiting with fish such as horse mackerel, mackerel, Japanese sardine, or pond smelt, the main hook can be attached through the nose, mouth, or back, and the assist hook can be attached to the tail or back. For small fish like anchovies or small horse mackerel, the assist hook can be used freely depending on the size.
