I photographed a crimson rose, applied a protective film, and then layered cardboard and felt, stitching around the edges with beads. The center is layered with felt to give it a three-dimensional effect. I considered keeping it simple with just red and black, but I thought it would be too heavy with only black jet-style pearl beads, so I combined it with deep blue to tie the whole piece together. A slightly blue glass vase is in the background of the rose, giving a clear, bright feel like the sky within the dark tones. I made this to go with a roughly textured, unadorned linen granny bag, or with a compressed knit or light felt coat that I wear in the spring.
