Katsu Kaishu (January 30, Bunsei 6 [March 12, 1823] - January 19, Meiji 32 [1899]) was a Japanese samurai (shogunate retainer) and politician. His court rank was Shonii (Senior Second Rank), his decoration was Kun'ittō (Order of the First Class), and his peerage was Hakushaku (Count). He served as the last Army President of the Edo shogunate and the first Navy Minister of the Meiji government. He is known as one of the "Three Vessels of the Bakumatsu" along with Yamaoka Tesshu and Takahashi Deishu. He was born in Honjo, Edo (present-day Sumida Ward, Tokyo). His childhood name and common name were Rintaro. His imina (personal name) was Yoshikuni. After the Meiji Restoration, he changed his name to Yasuyoshi. This was because he was known as Katsu Awa (Katsu of Awa) after using the court title "Awa no Kami" (Governor of Awa) during the Bakumatsu period. After the Meiji Restoration, he avoided "Awa" and replaced it with the homophone "An-ho" (安芳). Kaishu was his gō (art name), taken from the calligraphy "Kaishu Shoya" by Sakuma Shozan, but it is unknown whose name "Kaishu" originally was. Thank you very much for your interest in the product.
