According to fashion historian and curator Richard Martin, "Calugi e Giannelli invented and reinvented clothing, especially menswear, as if it were conceptual art." Their approach to menswear was disruptive, introducing elements of sportswear and clerical dress into their collections, using fabrics and bodies to explore a new masculinity. Art was a leitmotif, but they used clothing as a playground, experimenting with a variety of inspirations, including Pop Art, Mark Rothko, Piet Mondrian, tattoos, and church hats. While their concepts were artistic, their designs were far from art or craft, updating the study of textile technology. Danilo Giannelli unfortunately passed away in 1987, but Mauro Calugi continued to lead the brand, designing with the same spirit that characterized the duo, injecting an avant-garde take on Italian menswear and making the brand a very unique voice in the landscape.
