Masakuni initially used the name Masakatsu. He became the exclusive swordsmith for Kato Kiyomasa, the lord of the Kumamoto domain, upon Kiyomasa's entry. He was granted the name Masakuni by Kiyomasa himself. Doutanuki swords became popular due to their reputation for being strong, unbending, and exceptionally sharp, making them sought after by warriors.
