The Okiagari Koboshi, with its "seven falls, eight rises" meaning, was used to pray for the safety of the family and good health. It was customary to buy one more than the number of family members and display them on the household Shinto altar to celebrate the New Year. The Yamada Mingei Workshop, run by the current fourth-generation Toshimasa Yamada and his son Kenji, the fifth generation, is the only shop that makes Okiagari Koboshi by hand using traditional methods. This work is probably from the time of the third generation. The glue paint on the clay weight has peeled off, but please appreciate the expression of the old doll.
