The screenplay was written by Laloux and Roland Topor, who also handled the original drawings. The animation was produced by Jiří Trnka Studio in Prague. A French-Czechoslovakian co-production. It won the Special Jury Prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival and was ranked as the 36th greatest animated film of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in 2016. The original work is the science fiction novel "Oms en série" by Stefan Wul.
