This is an excavated item from a Shigaraki ware kiln site. Some time ago, I listed a slightly more slender cylindrical bowl, which is likely from the same kiln site. This piece has a large chip on the rim, which has been repaired. There are many "furimono" (small, irregular protrusions) on the inside, and kiln cracks have been sealed with lacquer. Shigaraki tea bowls are extremely rare, and it's said that encountering one is like meeting one's parent's enemy. Of course, this saying refers to those from the Momoyama to early Edo periods, but even those from later periods are rarely seen. This item is likely something else in origin, but it is perfect as a cylindrical tea bowl. There are some areas that appear to be "kase" (discoloration from firing) and some sticking on the bottom where the clay was cut, but I have scraped off as much as possible, so it doesn't wobble much.
