It is a silk fabric with kasuri (ikat) patterns in both warp and weft, and is made from hand-spun yarn spun from tama-mayu (double cocoons). Murayama Oshima Tsumugi developed from the combination of "Murayama Kon-gasuri," a cotton fabric characterized by indigo dyeing (shōai-zome), and "Sunakawa Futori," a silk fabric made from tama-mayu. It spread with the name "Oshima" because it resembles Oshima Tsumugi from Amami Oshima. The characteristics of Murayama Oshima Tsumugi are the "ita-jime-senshoku" (board-clamping dyeing) technique using kasuri boards and the intricate warp and weft kasuri patterns. Ita-jime-senshoku is a technique of dyeing yarn using kasuri boards made by carving grooves based on a design.
