It began with a custom surfboard shop opened by founder Craig Sugihara in 1971. The name comes from the fact that the surf shop was located exactly between two surf spots on Oahu, "Waikiki (Town)" and "North Shore (Country)." The trademark is "Yin Yang." The brand led surf culture in the 1970s and is now one of the world's top three surf brands. In Japan, Crimson, an apparel company, acquired the license and handled planning and sales.
