The hairstyle of this doll (while retaining the Edo style, it has a soft roundness and realistic modeling overall) is often seen in the late Meiji era. This period was when the traditions of Edo and Western realistic expression began to merge, and it was a time when doll makers created works that were mature in both technique and design. An Ichimatsu doll typical of the Kyoto-Osaka workshop, incorporating realistic modeling and delicate dyeing and weaving expressions while retaining the traditions of the Edo period. The elegant and well-formed shape and the warm expression unique to Tokumei are in harmony. ■The costume features an Edo-style design with a blue checkered crepe fabric and red edging. A belt with a geometric pattern on a black background and red and yellow obiage (sash ties) are added as accents, giving a sense of gorgeousness. Crepe fabric of the same material as the kimono is used for the hair ornaments. ■The hair is styled in the Japanese hair style of the time, tied up in a round shape. A red decorative cloth matching the kimono is placed on the top of the head, and the slightly low tied-up hair and the soft flow of hair remaining in the bangs, combined with a gentle smile, give a nostalgic beauty of the times. It's been almost a year and a half since I started using Mercari, but this doll is one that I have been restoring since before then. Because the hair was falling out a lot, I had human hair re-grown, but the hairstyle itself retains the original style. ■The structure is a three-fold type with paper and cotton filling. The head is finished with a thick coating of paulownia or paper clay, and although there is some cloudiness due to aging on the painted skin, the single-color black glass eyes retain their transparency and give a beautiful and clear impression. The facial features are a gentle design typical of Tokumei, combining youthfulness and elegance. ■There is shine from the hair re-growth, and it is a mix of human hair.
