【Stadtbahn ②】Japan Tram Handbook 1981 Edition A must-have for streetcar enthusiasts, the 1981 edition of the "Japan Tram Handbook." This valuable book follows in the footsteps of the fanzine "Trolley Lines," known as a bible for streetcar fans. Published by the Japan Streetcar Enthusiasts Association as "Stadtbahn Vol. 2," it's a detailed record of the state of streetcars at the time. However, in those days, there was no "Comiket" or even large bookstores with railway book sections. It wasn't published by a major publisher, so the acquisition routes were quite limited, mostly to specialized stores that handled railway models. Although the text is primarily done with a Japanese typewriter and simple drawings, it covers the route information, fares, vehicles, and operating systems of 19 streetcar operators nationwide, from the Sapporo City Transportation Bureau to the Chikuho Electric Railway. It also touches on the history and characteristics of each operator, vividly conveying the appearance of streetcars at the time. The inclusion of information on lines that no longer exist, such as the gas company route of the Hakodate City Tram and the Nishitetsu Kitakyushu Line, makes it a highly valuable resource for enthusiasts. It's a treat for railway fans who reminisce about the vehicles of abolished tram lines and "chinchin densha" (streetcars).
