Therefore, it exhibits the following behaviors characteristic of vintage analog equipment. ● Crackling noise when switching knobs Crackling noise (click noise) occurs the moment the INPUT GAIN, RATIO, and OUTPUT GAIN knobs are turned (it becomes louder as the INPUT GAIN level increases). This is a specification due to the structure of the step switches and the aging of the parts. There is no noise during recording (when the knobs are not being touched), so there is no practical issue. ● Noise (saturation) at high gain When MARINAIR is selected and INPUT GAIN is increased to 4 or 5, noise and distortion occur. This is because the MARINAIR output is very high, causing the transformer to magnetically saturate. Basically, Gain 1-2 provides sufficient volume. Use Gain 4-5 as a special setting to intentionally add analog distortion and harmonics (LUNDAHL is clean at Gain 4, and OEP is clean even at Gain 5).
